What are Nerve Conduction Studies?

Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are a diagnostic test used to evaluate the function and integrity of your nerves. The test involves applying small electrical impulses to specific nerves and recording the response, helping to identify nerve damage or abnormalities.

Preparing for Nerve Conduction Studies:

– Please inform your doctor about any medications you are currently taking, as some medications may interfere with the test. Your doctor will advise you if any medications need to be temporarily stopped before the test.

– It is important to avoid using any creams, lotions, or oils on your skin on the day of the test, as they may interfere with the electrode placement.

– Please let us know if you have any metal implants, such as pacemakers or defibrillators, as they may affect the test procedure.

– Dress comfortably in loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the areas being tested.

During Nerve Conduction Studies:

– You will be comfortably positioned on an examination table or chair.

– The technician will apply small electrodes to your skin over the nerves being tested. These electrodes are painless and do not transmit any electrical currents into your body.

– The technician will deliver small electrical impulses to the electrodes, which may cause a mild tingling or twitching sensation.

• The responses from the nerves will be recorded and analyzed by a specialist.

After Nerve Conduction Studies:

– You can resume your normal activities immediately after the test. There are no restrictions or side effects associated with nerve conduction studies.

• The results will be interpreted by a neurologist or specialist who will discuss the findings and their implications with you during a follow-up appointment.
